Greek Police Bust Group Smuggling Migrants Through Europe

Greek police busted a major group that was illegally smuggling migrants to other EU member states, by offering them fake travel documents.
More specifically, the Security Office of the Central Port Authority of Piraeus along with a Greek Police’s special unit and officers of the Maritime Border Security and Protection Directorate arrested a total of 29 individuals.
All of those who were arrested were nationals of Asian countries and are now accused of violating the law that prohibits the entrance, stays, and integration of non-EU nationals in the country.
Two of the twenty-nine arrested are also charged with setting up a criminal organization and with forgery.
The police operation discovered an apartment in Athens’ Kypseli neighborhood, used as a ”safe house”.
There, twenty-seven migrants were found, waiting for the criminal organization to allow them to travel to other EU countries. All of them were also arrested.
The Greek authorities have found 17 fake passports and three national IDs.
Greek authorities are now investigating if the group is part of a larger international migrant smuggling organization that operates in Europe and Asia.
