Clashes between leftist students and police seem to have returned to central Athens for good since, for yet another day, the city center of the Greek capital was closed on Thursday, as thousands of students marched against the new, conservative government.
Despite the rainy weather, thousands protested on the central avenues in Athens, railing against recent educational reforms including the University Asylum law, which bans the police from entering University property.
What began as another peaceful demonstration turned into a violent clash, as a handful of hooligans attempted to break the police blockade near the Parliament building.
Several protesters began throwing rocks and hitting police officers in order to try to continue their march and reach the premises of the House.
Police responded immediately with tear gas, creating — for a second consecutive day — a foggy atmosphere in downtown Athens, this time along Queen Sophia (Vasilissis Sophias) Avenue.
A few minutes later, the protesters left the scene and then headed towards the Polytechnic School.
Meanwhile, the entire city center remained closed off to vehicles, causing major traffic jams in nearby Athens neighborhoods.
