Greece Receives the Most Child Asylum Requests in the EU in Relation to Population

According to the findings of a recent study titled ”Data on Children in Migration” conducted by the Joint Research Centre (JRC) of the European Commission, Greece is the EU member state with the highest number of child asylum requests in relation to its population.
The JRC study found out that Greece, Cyprus, Germany, Malta, Luxembourg, Austria, and Sweden top the EU list in terms of asylum requests made for children for every 100,000 residents.
More specifically, in 2018 Greece received 184 asylum requests for kids for every 100,000 residents in the country, a figure similar to 2017’s when it received 183 for every 100,000 of its residents.
However, over the last five years, the number has been dramatically increased, in 2014, Greece handled 12 child asylum requests for every 100,000 residents.
The nationalities of the kids who requested asylum in Greece in 2018 were 29 percent Syrian, 23 percent Afghan, 20 percent Iraqi, and 8 percent Turkish.
The JRC study also found out that between 2014 and 2018 the number of children that moved from a third country to an EU member state rose by 17 percent.
Migration has become one of Europe’s most prominent problems over the last five years, as millions of refugees and migrants have landed on its southern shores since the Syrian civil war erupted.
