The population of Greece experienced a decrease in 2018, with the nation having 33,857 more deaths than the number of births recorded, according to official data released on Tuesday by the Greek statistical service, ELSTAT.
There were a total of 86,440 births in Greece in 2018 (44,525 boys and 41,915 girls), representing a decrease of 2.4 percent from 2017, when 88,553 new Greek citizens were born, 45,686 of whom were male and 42,867 female.
In 2018, there were 120,297 deaths across the nation of Greece (61,387 men and 58.910 women). This was actually a decrease of 3.4 percent from 2017, during which 124,501 individuals died (63,168 men and 61,333 women).
The number of infant deaths in Greece last year was under 300, a slight increase in the infant mortality rate from 3.46 per 100 live births in 2017 to 3.47 percent in 2018.
There were a total of 47,428 marriages in Greece last year (24,418 religious and 23,010 civil), down 5.4 percent from 2017, when 50,138 marriages (24,975 religious and 25,163 civil) took place.
The total number of formal cohabitation agreements amounted to 6,369, an increase of 29.4 percent over 2017, which was 4,921. Last year’s cohabitation agreements included 231 between men and 55 between women.
