In recognition of his impressive acting work over the years, Tom Hanks has been chosen to receive the prestigious Cecil B. DeMille Award at next year’s Golden Globes.

Hollywood Foreign Press Association President Lorenzo Soria announced the committee’s decision to honor Tom Hanks in part because of the “rich and playful characters” the actor had created over the years.

The association also took into consideration Hanks’ roles behind the camera, as he has frequently served as a director, writer, and producer as well as an actor.

Hanks has won four Golden Globes so far, for his work in “Philadelphia” and “Forrest Gump,” roles for which he also won Oscars, as well as his work in “Big” and “Cast Away.” The actor has been nominated for Golden Globe Awards a total of nine times to date.

The Cecil B. DeMille Award is meant as a kind of lifetime achievement award for those who have made “an incredible impact in the world of entertainment”, according to the HFPA. Past recipients of this award include Oprah Winfrey, Meryl Streep, Morgan Freeman, Sidney Poitier, Jeff Bridges, and Lucille Ball.

Tune in to the 2020 Golden Globe Award ceremonies on January 5, 2020, to watch Hanks receive this prestigious award.
