President of the Republic of Cyprus Nicos AnastasiadesĀ attended a dinner hosted by the Federation of Cypriot-American Organizations in New York on Thursday evening.

The Cypriot president was accompanied by his wife Andri Anastasiades and other senior members of his administration.

Speaking about the current situation in Cyprus, Anastasiades stated that one (Turkish) provocation comes after the other; however, he reassured the attendees that he will do the best he can to reunite the divided island.

“This is the seventh year that I am attending a gathering of Greeks, whether they come from Greece or Cyprus,” the President said, adding that ”you all join forces to serve in the best possible way the interests of our homeland and of the country that generously hosts you.”

”Your presence and your creativity have helped make this great nation (the United States of America) even greater,” Anastasiades told the audience.

Referring to the current political situation of Cyprus, Anastasiades said that ”what we are striving for is no less than what every free-thinking man, every European citizen, every American citizen pursues: Respect the rules of freedom, democracy, and justice.”

”We aspire to and demand nothing more than what every other EU citizen in the rest of the EU member-states enjoys; and the human rights we fight for, are both for the Greek and the Turkish Cypriots. What we want is — at las t– peace, stability, and justice!” Anastasiades declared.

The Cypriot President reminded the attendees of the Turkish invasion of 1974, saying that ”this unacceptable and barbaric invasion has displaced one-third of our citizens, occupies one-third of our goods, and has trapped the Turkish Cypriots, turning them into a minority.”

The President went on to further analyze the situation of the Republic of Cyprus relative to President Erdogan’s provocative stance, and the position of Cyprus and Greece in regard to the efforts for a new round of negotiations.

The event was also attended by Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias and the newly-elected Archbishop of America, Elpidophoros.
