Greek Police Evict 230 Illegal Immigrants from Two Athens Squats

Police in Athens on Thursday removed over 200 illegal immigrants, including dozens of children, from two squats in the city center as part of a clean up drive by the new conservative government.
Some 230 individuals, including 70 children, were removed and taken to police headquarters for identification. Police officials say that after the identification process is completed, they will be moved to migrant camps.
State television network ERT showed the migrants boarding buses, some of them clutching plastic bags with their belongings.
The police conducted a similar operation in late August in two occupied buildings in the district of Exarchia.
The new government, which was voted into power in July, has vowed to close squats in its drive to combat “lawlessness,” but some anti-establishment and rights groups say the operations unfairly target migrant families, which would otherwise be homeless.
