Greek Government Decides to Sell 30% Stake in Athens' International Airport

The sale of a 30 percent stake in Athens’ Eleftherios Venizelos International Airport was decided at a meeting of the Greece’s Government Council on Economic Policy, held at the Finance Ministry on Wednesday.
Greek Finance Minister Christos Staikouras noted that “it is our ideological and policy position to view privatizations as a developmental tool for the economy, provided that these are carried out in terms of full transparency and with the public interest as the guideline.”
Staikouras added that ”we are implementing one more commitment we had undertaken, as this is the current government’s first privatization process.”
The minister indirectly attacked the previous leftist government of Alexis Tsipras, saying that ”a commitment to carry out the specific privatization was undertaken by the previous government but, of course, was never implemented.”
Approximately two-fifths of the airport is currently owned by Greece’s Republic Asset Development Fund, which will carry out the further privatization process of the facility.
