Heartbreaking Video Reveals Extent of Disaster on Greece's Evia Island After Wildfire

A drone flying over vast tracts of burned forestland has captured the extent of the environmental disaster on the island of Evia, northeast of Athens, after the huge fire there earlier in August.
Hundreds of firefighters, aided by water dropping planes and helicopters, battled against the flames for three entire days. Authorities were forced to order the evacuation of several villages as the fire threatened homes.
Evia’s pine forest, listed as a Natura 2000 protected area, has been completely destroyed. The burned area is estimated to be between 2,000 and 2,800 hectares of land (20,000-28,000 stremmas, or 6,919 acres).
