Growth, Investment Dominate Greek PM's Meeting With Chancellor Merkel

 

Greek premier Kyriakos Mitsotakis is meeting with Chancellor Angela Merkel on Thursday in Berlin, hoping to convince the German leader on aspects of his agenda for reform and growth.
According to government sources, Mitsotakis’ proposed plan includes presenting to the German officials the government’s planned reforms, with a partial aim of attracting foreign investments to Greece.
The two leaders gave a joint press conference after their meeting, in which Chancellor Merkel thanked the Greek prime minister for his visit. ”We talked about our two countries’ bilateral relations, which can be improved even further, and the PM presented to me his government’s economic policy,” Merkel stated.
”Half of the economy is psychology,” Merkel noted, adding that because of that, ”the commitments of Greece will now be mush easier,” referring to the positive stance the global markets are now taking toward Greece.

The two leaders’ delegations discussed large-scale development plans for the next decade, from 2020 to the year 2030, including the environment and energy sectors.
The leaders of Greece and Germany also discussed issues related to the future of the EU, including security and collaboration in southeastern Europe, including the role Greece plays in the area.

The issue of migration was also on the table, with the two sides agreeing that the stipulations of the EU-Turkey deal must be implemented.
When asked about the issue of war reparations which Greece is demanding from Germany, PM Mitsotakis said that he hopes there will be a positive solution to the issue, which will improve bilateral relations between the two countries.
Earlier on Thursday, Mitsotakis, who is accompanied by Finance Minister Christos Staikouras and government spokesman Stelios Petsas, met with Olaf Scholz, the German Finance Minister, to discuss current economic affairs on both the national and European levels.
