UN Calls on Greece to Protect Migrant Youths After Death at Lesvos Camp

The UN refugee agency on Sunday called on the Greek government to immediately transfer migrant youths to safe areas after a fatal brawl at the Moria migrant camp on the island of Lesvos.
“The Greek government must take urgent measures to ensure that these children are transferred to a safe place,” said Philippe Leclerc, the UNHCR representative in Greece, in a statement released to the press.
Leclerc declared that he was shocked to hear that a 15-year-old Afghan boy had fatally stabbed a compatriot and injured two others in a fight that broke out at the Moria camp.
The two injured boys were admitted to a hospital, where one required life-saving surgery.
The UNHCR also stated that a fourth teenager, also from Afghanistan, was arrested by police in connection with the violent clash.
The cause of the fight between the youths is not yet known.
At present, thousands of migrants and refugees typically spend months at Moria and other overcrowded island camps in Greece before their applications can be processed.
