According to Greek military authorities, a total of six Turkish fighter jets violated Greek air space over the Eastern Aegean Sea on Monday at noontime.
At 12:03 PM local time on Monday, a pair of Turkish F-16 fighter jets flew over the islets of Anthropofagi and Makronisi in the Eastern Aegean Sea, at a height of 22,400 feet, without first submitting a flight plan to Athens’ FIR, as they are required to do.
Just one minute later, four additional Turkish jets, this time F-4s, flew over the same islets at an altitude of only 10,000 feet.
This coordinated pair of incidents caused Greek fighter jets to take off and chase the Turkish fighters away, ”following the international rules of engagement,” according to a statement issued by the Greek National Defense General Staff (GEETHA).
Of course, this was not the first time Turkish jets have violated Greek air space this summer, as Turkish jets have been conducting these types of overflights on a regular, ongoing basis over the last several years.
