Twenty-eight lighthouses in Greece will open to the public on Sunday as part of the global celebration of International Lighthouse and Lightship Weekend (ILLW).
More than 20,000 visitors across Greece visited the many lighthouses which dot the shores of the country on the same day last year.
The aim of the ILLW initiative is to inform citizens about the critical importance of lighthouses and other aids to navigation, as well as their history, and the maritime history of the area.
The ILLW also desires to instill an appreciation for the vital work performed by lighthouse keepers, which is often carried out under very difficult and even perilous conditions.
The majority of Greece’s lighthouses were constructed beginning in the early nineteenth century onward, and they have continued to serve a crucial role in navigation in this  maritime-oriented country ever since.
The annual open lighthouse celebration, which began in 1998, is presided over every year by the Ayr Amateur Radio Group. The ILLW, which features over 500 lighthouses located in over forty countries across the globe, takes place on the third weekend of every August.
