Leonardo DiCaprio Shares Video of Andros Island Plastics Cleanup

Leonardo DiCaprio was spotted on the Greek island of Paros last week, enjoying all the delights that the idyllic destination has to offer during his summer vacation. But the actor, long known for his environmental activism, took an opportunity to bring attention to the ongoing issue of underwater pollution yesterday.
The Oscar-winning actor and environmentalist posted a disturbing video from Al Jazeera showing the seabed surrounding Andros Island covered with fishing nets, plastic bags — and even toilet seats.
The video, posted to DiCaprio’s personal Instagram account, shows an environmental organization cleaning up these objects and other types of rubbish from the waters around Andros.
The environmental organization responsible for the cleanup, called “Aegean ReBreath,” has a primary goal of helping Greek seas “breathe again” through the collection, recycling, and upcycling of marine trash. The organization also stresses the importance of adopting a completely new culture on waste management globally.
Aegean ReBreath began the Andros Island cleanup on July 20, 2019.
More than 8 million tons of plastic end up in the seas of the world each and every year. Fishing nets account for fully forty-six percent of all ocean plastics.
The Mediterranean Sea is surrounded almost entirely by land, which contributes to waste becoming trapped in its waters and heightens the concentration of microplastics which enter the food chain. These types of pollutants consist of plastic waste that is 5mm or smaller — and in some cases, can even be invisible to the naked eye.
Various scientific studies have proven that this problem is quite prominent in the entire Aegean Sea.
Leonardo DiCaprio wrote in his post: “Plastic bags and toilet seats. Hundreds of discarded fishing nets. All of this was stuck to the seabed of Greece’s Andros Island.⁣ Volunteers collected over 660 lbs. of plastic waste.
“But some say the microplastics leave an invisible imprint on the environment and even ourselves. They can be consumed by fish that then become a part of our diet,⁣” he noted.
DiCaprio is so serious about his environmental efforts that he founded the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation in 1998, which is dedicated to the well-being and protection of all the ecosystems on the globe.
The foundation supports projects around the world which build climate resiliency, protect vulnerable wildlife, and restore balance to threatened ecosystems and communities.
