Cyprus Police Arrest British Tourist Who Alleged Gang Rape

The police in Cyprus releasing Israeli suspects after the woman who charged she had been raped was taken into custody.

A British woman who claimed she was gang-raped in Cyprus was arrested herself on Sunday on suspicion of making a false accusation, as police released seven Israeli tourists from their custody.
The 19-year-old woman had claimed that twelve Israeli teenagers raped her on July 17 at a hotel at the popular Cypriot holiday resort of Ayia Napa.
According to the state-run Cyprus News Agency, the woman told investigators she initially filed a rape report after feeling “angry and insulted” that some of the young Israeli men had filmed her having sex with them.
The suspects told a hearing that the woman had agreed to be filmed and that “everything was consensual.”
“She wanted sex,” one of them assured the authorities.
The UK provides Cyprus with by far its tourist market, with over 1.3 million British tourists visiting the eastern Mediterranean island last year, according to official Cypriot statistics.
Cyprus is also a major destination for Israeli tourists, with more than 230,000 visiting the island in 2019.
