First Female Captain appointed to Hellenic Air Force Academy

An important day in history was marked last week in the nation of Greece, as The Hellenic Air Force Academy appointed its first female captain as its head.
Captain Marina Konstantinou, from Patras, entered the Academy in 2016, earning the extremely impressive distinction of coming in second in her class. Three years later, at her inauguration ceremony, the head of the 2019 class of pilot officers handed her the military flag, granting her the rank of captain and head of the Academy.
“As a young girl I thought about becoming a doctor because my parents were doctors, but that changed in the process. I really love airplanes, so I slowly got caught up in it,” Konstantinou told reporters.
“This Academy is a combination of willingness, conscious choice, study and skills. From high school I had the idea and I could not think what else I would have liked to do in my life,” she related.
The newly appointed captain made it clear that she was not intimidated by the fact that the Air Force is unquestionably a male-dominated field.
“Anyone who sets a goal that they really want and are willing to make small sacrifices, they will succeed,” she declared.
The ceremony for her induction was attended by President Prokopis Pavlopoulos along with a number of political leaders and representatives from the Ministry of National Defense. A sizable contingent of the proud friends and family of the new Air Force leader were also in attendance.
Captain Konstantinou is the daughter of Aspasia Mourtou and the late Professor of Neurosurgery at the University of Patras, Dimitris Konstantinou, who passed away years ago during a mountain climbing expedition in the Andes.
