Turkish Citizen Arrested for Smuggling Hundreds of Ancient Greek Coins

Ancient Greek coins found on Turkish smuggler

Officers at the customs office of Kipoi (on the border with Turkey) confiscated 1,055 ancient Greek coins from a Turkish national on Tuesday, after a search was carried out when the suspect was entering the country from Turkey.
The Independent Authority for Public Revenue announced that the investigators of the Prosecution Department discovered that the bus passenger was carrying 1,055 ancient Greek coins which he had concealed into 7 plastic water bottles that he had placed at the bottom of the bag which contained food, and wrapped with transparent tape.
The suspect, confessed that the coins he carried were handed to him in his home in Turkey by unknown people in order for him to take them to Germany for 1,400 euros, where he would hand them to a person he did not know.
He was referred to the prosecutor of Alexandroupoli, in northeastern Greece for violating the Antiquities Act.
The ancient coins were handed over to the Ephorate of Antiquities of Alexandroupolis, which concluded that the ancient coins fall under the Antiquities Act and will be sent for further examination and accurate identification of each coin in the central archaeological service.
