Maria Sakkari on Wednesday defeated Czech Marie Bouzkova two set to love (6-4, 6-1) to advance to the third round of the Wimbledon tournament.
The Greek champion, the 31st seed in the women’s draw, will now face world number eight Ukrainian Elina Svitolina for a place in the last 16.
Sakkari’s win was some consolation for Greek fans after the unexpected exit of Stefanos Tsitsipas from the first round of the tournament.
The world number six lost in the best of five sets to Italy’s Thomas Fabbiano (world number 89), who the Greek had beaten twice before, including last year at Wimbledon in the third round.
