The Turkish Coast Guard announced on Monday that a dinghy carrying forty migrants sank near the coast of Bodrum in the Aegean Sea.
Thirty-one people were rescued by the Turkish authorities, who were responsible for the rescue operation, but unfortunately, nine additional people are still missing.
The incident took place in the are of the Aegean sea near Bodrum (the ancient city of Halicarnassus) in southwest Turkey. It is not known where the boat was heading, but it is most likely that the smugglers intended to bring the immigrants to Greece.
Turkish authorities are still searching the area to locate the missing individuals.
Turkey has served as the main gate for refugees and migrants who are attempting to reach the European Union since 2014.
Millions of refugees are currently living in the country, which hosts migrants and refugees from Syria, Afghanistan, Iraq and many more African and Asian countries.
Earlier on Monday, authorities in North Macedonia announced that they have detained fifty migrants who entered the country from Greece’s northern border, in an apparent effort to revive the so-called ”Balkan route,” in order to reach central Europe.
The country’s authorities said they will deport the migrants back to Greece.
