PM Tsipras Saves Greece's Participation in European Games After Ticket Debacle

Greek PM Alexis Tsipras on Thursday saved the blushes of the country’s athletics federation (SEGAS) by offering the official government jet to fly its athletes to Belarus for the European Games.
Tsipras’ intervention followed SEGAS’ announcement earlier that Greek participation in the games, planned for later this month in Minsk, was cancelled.
The SEGAS announcement read, “With particular regret that for technical reasons (inability to find tickets) (we have) to withdraw our team from participation in the European Games in Minsk.”
The federation added that they had been making every effort since mid-April to secure transport to the Belarusian capital, but without success.
Greece’s Olympic Committee president Spyros Capralos had earlier said he was “deeply saddened” by SEGAS’ decision.
Late on Thursday, Tsipras intervened to offer his jet so that the Greek athletes could compete.
“SEGAS expresses their warm thanks to the Prime Minister for solving this problem,” SEGAS officials said in their latest announcement.
