Union of Centrists Party Loses Parliamentary-Caucus Status

The Greek Union of Centrists (EK) party lost its parliamentary-caucus status on Thursday, following Ioannis Saridis’ decision to leave the party and stand as an Independent MP.
The decision of Saridis, which was made public in a letter sent to the Speaker of the House Nikolaos Voutsis, effectively dissolved the parliamentary caucus of EK, since the rules stipulate that any Greek party must have at least five MPs in parliament in order to constitute a parliamentary group.
Saridis had made clear that he no longer intends to run on EK’s slate in the upcoming elections by voting in favor of Governmental bills.
People close to Vassilis Leventis, the president of the party, told Greece’s Kathimerini that the party is not concerned about this development, as the Greek Parliament is expected to be officially dissolved in a few days.
This is the result of Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras’ decision to lead the country to snap elections on July 7.
