According to official results published on Sunday night, Kostas Bakoyannis has a clear lead in the race for Athens’ mayoral office.
With almost all votes counted, the New Democracy-backed candidate received 42.6 percent of the vote and is a clear favorite to win in the second round, where he will face SYRIZA-backed Nasos Iliopoulos, who netted 16.9 percent of the vote.
Whichever two contestants garner more than 50 percent of the vote next Sunday will become Athens’ new mayor, and will take office on September 1, 2019.
