A group of vandals disrupted traffic on central Athens’ Patission Avenue on Monday afternoon, setting trash bins on fire and scattering fliers in support of convicted terrorist Dimitris Koufontinas.
The unrest took place outside the Athens University of Economics and Business, or ASOEE, as it is known in Greece.
This is the latest incident in a series of disruptions and clashes which have erupted between so-called anarchists and police authorities in Athens, following Koufontinas’ decision to go on a hunger strike. The convicted assassin is demanding a new furlough from the prison of Volos.
A series of attacks have taken place across many targets in Athens since the latest rejection of Koufontinas’ demands. This latest unrest is happening in a city which has suffered for so long from incidents of vandalism and disruption of public life.
Koufontinas is serving a series of life sentences for acting as the lead assassin in the far-left “17 November” (17N) terrorist group, which killed dozens of Greek and foreign officials and ordinary citizens between 1974 and 2001. The organization’s functionaries were finally arrested in 2001, breaking the back of the terrorist group.
