Greece Celebrates 40 Years Since it Joined the European Family

The office of the European Commission in Athens organized a massive event in Athens’ ”Zappeion Megaron” on Saturday to celebrate Europe Day and the 40 years since Greece joined the European Economic Community (EEC), the predecessor of the European Union.
Music, dance and a series of events marked the milestones in EU’s history that took place in May and involved Greece.

Forty years ago, in May 1979 at an event that also took place at Zappeion Megaron, the then Greek Prime Minister Constantinos Karamanlis signed the country’s accession to the EEC, making Greece the tenth official member of the European family.
Margaritis Schinas, the spokesperson of Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker noted on Saturday that Europe is comprised of every one of us and that we should remember ”it is made of rights, democracy, citizens, open borders, solidarity, health, education and freedom of movement”.
The European Commission also commemorated the 15th anniversary of the EU’s largest enlargement in 2004, when ten more countries, among which the Republic of Cyprus, joined the Union.
Several embassies of EU countries in Athens took part in the celebrations, with traditional dances, costumes and food.
