Greece’s new ”Electronic Document Transfer System,” the bill for which was signed by government ministers on Friday, is expected to save the Greek state at least €380 million in expenses annually.
It is believed that the new, breakthrough system will totally change Greece’s public sector services and citizens’ transactions with the state. It will electronically link 21,000 entities and provide 150,000 remote digital signatures to public officials, saving the state millions in operational costs.
The project has a budget of €18.5 million and is scheduled to be completed in ten months. It will then run on a pilot basis for two months, before coming into full force.
“It is one of the biggest reforms in the public sector,” Nikos Pappas, Minister for Digital Policy, Telecommunications and Media, said during the signing of the contract for its implementation. OTE Group Chairman and Managing Director Michael Tsamaz was also in attendance at the presentation.
Pappas noted in a tweet that the annual savings of the system will be equal to the amount the Greek state needs to pay for the newly-introduced rent subsidy for low-income families.
