George Broulias was elected on Wednesday afternoon as Athens’ new interim mayor, following the resignation of George Kaminis several days ago.
Broulias was elected by Kaminis‘ municipal group with eighteen votes from the city’s local council; Epameinondas Lamprakakis, the president of the local council, came in second, with seven votes.
George Kaminis, the former mayor of Athens, resigned recently, since he is running as a candidate in the upcoming European elections. Kaminis is hoping to represent the center-left Movement for Change (KINAL) party in the European Parliament.
Broulias was Athens’ vice mayor responsible for the issue of sanitation and is also a local councilor candidate on the team of Pavlos Geroulanos.
He will hold the office of mayor until August 31, as according to Greek law, the mayor who will be elected in the upcoming local elections takes office on September 1.
