Following a meeting between the Speakers of the House in the Greek Parliament, the debate regarding a confidence vote in the government will begin on Wednesday. It was also announced on Monday that the final vote will be held at midnight on Friday.
The three-day debate will take place after Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras decided to turn the Leader of the Opposition’s censure motion against Alternate Health Minister Pavlos Polakis into a full-on debate. The process will conclude with a confidence vote in Tsipras’ entire government.
Kyriakos Mitsotakis, the leader of the opposition, is expected to bring the censure motion before Parliament on Monday evening. When this happens, deputy Prime Minister Giannis Dragasakis will announce that the government will ask Parliament to offer its confidence vote to the Government.
The procedures will then begin on Wednesday, per the decision made at the speakers’ meeting.
The ruling Coalition of the Radical Left (SYRIZA) party currently enjoys the support of 145 MPs out of a total of 300.
At least six additional independent MPs support Tsipras’ government, so the chances that the sitting Greek government will win the confidence vote on Friday night are extremely high.
