Cyprus’ chief of police Zacharias Chrysostomou was sacked by President Nicos Anastasiades on Friday over his force’s failure to properly investigate missing persons reports. The missing women turned out to be the victims of Cyprus’ first serial killer.
This comes only one day after another official left office over the serial killer case.
Cyprus Justice Minister Ionas Nicolaou resigned on Thursday. Nicolaou denied having any responsibility in the case, which has plunged the island into shock and disbelief, and he blamed the police for their failures.
President Anastasiades sent a letter to Chrysostomou in which he noted that there were incidents of neglect on behalf of the police in regard to handling the disappearances of the unfortunate victims. The supposed incidents occurred before the actions of the serial killer had become known.
Anastasiades’ letter said ”I was led to the decision that I have to end your service as the Chief of the Cypriot Police,” noting that the chief has to take responsibility even if he is not personally responsible for the incidents of neglect.
Nicos Metaxas, the former army officer and confessed serial killer, has admitted to the murder of five migrant women and two girls in the case, which has rocked the island to its very core.
