Greek-Australian Sculptor Exhibits Stunning Works in Canberra

Works created by Greek-Australian sculptor Alex Kosmas  are being showcased at the exhibit “Brindabellas and Beyond” which is currently open at the Woolshed Gallery in Canberra.

His bronze and stainless steel works range from abstraction to surrealistic representations of trees in emptied landscapes.

Among the exhibits is the superb bronze “Archaeos”, from 1985, and the porcelain “Brindabellas,” created in 2018.

The major piece at the exhibition, “Precious”, just created in 2019, is a patinated bronze  representation of a gum tree, with a gilded trunk and branches and a total of 252 green bronze leaves. The arresting statue stands almost two meters high.

Kosmas graduated from the Canberra School of Art in its creative heyday in the early 1980s, where he majored in ceramics. He worked subsequently in sculpture foundries in Melbourne and Sydney, assisting other sculptors in the creation of their projects.

He was involved in establishing the Meridian Foundry, a casting and metal artist workshop in Melbourne in 1987. The sculptor has held solo exhibitions in Melbourne, Sydney and Canberra. Kosmas was given Australia’s National Ceramics Award in 1986.

The “Brindabellas and Beyond” exhibition runs until May 26.
