Greek Intelligence Service Refutes Plot Involving Ex PM Karamanlis' Assassination

Costas Karamanlis served as Greece’s Prime Minister from 2004 until 2009.

Documents from Greece’s National Intelligence Service (EYP) intimating that the so called ”Pythia Plot” was a complete falsehood were leaked to the Greek press on Thursday.
The ”Pythia Plot” was an alleged scenario involving the assassination of the former Conservative Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis by foreign powers.
Following Karamanlis’ resignation in 2009, the plot surfaced by way of a Russian official, who disclosed information about the supposed plot to the Greek authorities.
The scenario involved foreign nationals planning the assassination of Karamanlis, allegedly due to his very close ties with Vladimir Putin and the Russian government.
This unlikely scenario was bruited about for years, alternating somewhere between the spheres of truth and myth in Greek politics, with no credible evidence whatsoever brought forth.
Despite the lack of critical evidence, a trial is set to take place in a few days; time, with the prime suspect, referred to by the code-name ”William B,” completely at large.
According to the leaked EYP documents, Yiannis Roubatis, the head of the Greek Intelligence Service, informed the Greek government that “there was not the slightest indication that there had been any plot to assassinate Mr Karamanlis.” The documents were published on Thursday by Greece’s Ta Nea and EfSyn newspapers.
The documents also note that the lack of evidence is such that the Russian official’s claims cannot be even partially substantiated. In fact, the EYP documents note that the entire scenario was constructed with the intention of misleading the Greek state.
