George Lucas Establishes Academy Grant to Honor Sid Ganis

Director of the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures Kerry Brougher announced that George Lucas, through his Family Foundation, has given a grant to the museum in honor of Sid Ganis.

The grant will be used to create free admission for all museum visitors under age 18. This will hopefully encourage even more young people to learn about the history and current state of film.

Ganis is the current Vice President of the Academy’s Board of Governors, as well as Chair of the Museum Committee. Though he was born in Brooklyn, his family hails from the city of Ioannina.

The renowned producer was highly honored and grateful to Lucas for the grant in his honor. He emphasized that “education has always been a primary goal of George’s storytelling. Now through his incredible generosity young people from everywhere can experience and learn about the art and the techniques of filmmaking.”

Ganis has been behind such movies as “Big Daddy” and “Akeelah and the Bee”. He also was the executive producer on a documentary titled “From ‘Star Wars’ to ‘Jedi’: The Making of a Saga”, tying him to Lucas.

Director Brougher was deeply thankful for the grant and the opportunities it would provide. He announced, “at the Academy Museum, we are committed to helping educate our youngest visitors: the children and teens who will be the next generation of filmmakers, writers, and visual artists. To succeed though we must break down the financial barriers that make it difficult for families, students, and teens to visit cultural institutions.”
