Five-Year Temporary Visa Program for Parents Begins in Australia

Australian citizens or permanent residents can now apply for a temporary visa for their parents to stay for a longer period with them compared to the time they were allotted with the old visitor’s visa.

Announced by the government on March 1, 2019, the new visa will help parents reunite with their children and grandchildren in Australia who are legal citizens or permanent residents.

With this temporary visa, parents of Australian citizens or residents can now stay for a period of five years without leaving Australia. After that, the parents must be outside Australia for at least 90 days before becoming eligible to apply for the same visa.

For a parent to be eligible for the visa, he or she must be the biological, adoptive, or step-parent of the sponsor, who must be an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident, or eligible New Zealand citizen.

Australian Minister for Immigration, Citizenship and Multicultural Affairs David Coleman said the government will deliver on the strong demand for this visa.

“This new visa will ensure family reunions are possible for thousands of migrant families and will deliver great social benefits to families and communities across Australia,” he said.
