Forest Fire in Northwest Peloponnese Under Control

The wildfire which erupted in theĀ Strofilia forestĀ in northwest Peloponnese on Tuesday is said to be under control, after dozens of firefighters and fire-fighting aircraft battled the flames.
Firefighting planes rejoined the fight against the fire, which was burning on the borders of the prefectures of Achaia and Ileia, at first light on Wednesday. A major firefighting effort had continued throughout the night, with a total of 90 firemen and 35 fire engines battling to put out the blaze which had started on Tuesday afternoon.
According to sources, the fact that the fire is close to the shore allows aircraft to quickly load up on water and douse the flames. An investigation into the cause of the fire is underway.
Strofilia Forest is the largest pine forest in Greece, with trees shaped like large umbrellas. It is part of a 22-square kilometer (8.5 square mile) national park which is part of the ā€œNatura 2000ā€ network and is protected under the Ramsar Convention.
With rich fauna and flora, the Strofilia Forest is a rare natural habitat which hundreds of people visit every day.
