Maria Spyraki was named a Member of the European Parliament of the Year in the category of “Industry, Research and Innovation” on Wednesday.

Spyraki is an MEP for the European People’s Party, to which the New Democracy party belongs.

“This prize belongs to all the Greek citizens who work and create in innovative ways to overcome the crisis. It is important for all of us to make a fresh start to redefine our common European future,” Spyraki stated after it was announced that she had won the prize.

Spyraki was chosen by a total of 751 MEPs, based on proposals made by bodies, civil organizations and associations representing Europe-wide industries as well as small and medium-sized enterprises.

The honor was bestowed on Spyraki based on her legislative activity and her presence in European and international fora. She was the only Greek candidate among the 45 MEPs who reached the final stage of the competition.

In total, fifteen MEPs were awarded in fifteen separate categories corresponding to the  different committees of the European Parliament.

Spyraki is a 53-year-old journalist who was first elected as an MEP in 2014.
