Nearly six out of ten Greeks who live and work abroad wish to return to Greece, according to a survey presented on Monday by Greece’s National Documentation Center.
Asked about which conditions would make the ex-pats return, the Center’s report says that seventy percent of them mention the quality of life in Greece and forty-two percent cite their desire to be close to their families.
However, the two main factors which would make these people return to Greece were purely economic.
Forty four percent said that higher wages would make them repatriate, with thirty-six per cent stating that just finding a job in their specialization would be enough to go back to Greece.
The vast majority of the respondents said that they would be interested in working with Greek companies, universities, research centers or other initiatives which would help both themselves and Greek society.
According to the survey, one in five out of a total of 2,697 scholarship fellows polled have already permanently returned to Greece, after spending at least five years abroad.
The new data is the product of preliminary surveys to record the needs, skills and intentions of Greeks who live and work abroad.
The research was conducted within the framework of the initiative “Bridges of Knowledge and Cooperation.” The aim of the project is to foster the networking of Greek scientists and professionals worldwide and their readaptation to the needs of the Greek economy.
