Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras welcomed more than one-hundred eighty women from all walks of life to Athens’ Maximos Mansion on Friday to mark International Women’s Day 2019.
“We have opened up the doors of the Maximos Mansion to give a symbolic message that the struggle is ongoing, that this is not a day of celebration, it is a day that reminds us that the struggle continues,” Tsipras said in his address to the women.
”Equality cannot be established only in the laws, it must also be established in practice, and this is something that is a constant battle in our daily lives, our society, our workplaces and our families, a battle with stereotypes and prejudice,” the prime minister noted.

”Despite that many battles have been won in the last years, the war against injustice is not over, and instances of discrimination against women in the workplace continue”, Tsipras said. He then addied that it was his pleasure to see so many women from the armed forces  among the guests, including Air Force pilots.
The event at Maximos Mansion was attended by many women currently serving in the cabinet, with Tsipras noting that the women he had entrusted with responsibilities have produced excellent results.
The prime minister also noted that his government incorporated regulations from the Council of Europe’s convention on ”preventing violence against women” into Greek law. New structures have now been set up in Greece to support and advise victims of gender violence using the Council’s guidelines.
Tsipras also mentioned policies his government implemented which increased the number of day care openings, which is an important support for working families. The current administration was also behind an extension of maternity leave rights for mothers in the workplace.
