Vegans demonstrated against meat-eating in central Athens on Thursday morning, a day that is celebrated in Greece as “Tsiknopempti”. Today is the Thursday prior to Lent when people celebrate the eating of meat before the beginning of the forty-day meatless fast.
The vegan activists scattered leaflets that urged people to ”Eat Lentils.” Others had written the phrase ”Your Celebrations Smell Like Blood” on the papers which were thrown about.
The protesters also distributed informative material which gave reasons for their case against the eating of meat.
The demonstration took place outside of Varvakeios, the central flea meat market of Athens, sparking mixed reactions among nearby customers.
Many people approached the activists and discussed the pros and cons of the issue. Others seemed to not be bothered at all, as they just went about their business of buying their meats to celebrate Tsiknopempti.
Tsiknopempti, meaning literally “Smelly Thursday”, or even “Charred,” “Smoky,” or “Barbeque” Thursday, because of the smell of the grilled meat in the air, is a vital part of the traditional celebrations for Carnival season in Greece.
