Deputy Secretary of State John J. Sullivan spoke on Tuesday with Greek Foreign Minister George Katrougalos and North Macedonian Prime Minister Zoran Zaev, congratulating them on the Prespa Agreement.

Robert Palladino, deputy spokesman for the State Department, said that Sullivan lauded the Greek government’s leadership and courage in pursuing a resolution of this issue. In the US’ view, the new concord will unlock economic benefits for Greece and solidify its role as a pillar of stability in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Balkans.
The deputy secretary underscored the United States’ strong support for the Agreement, as it is viewed as an historic opportunity to advance security and prosperity throughout the region.
Earlier, Sullivan also spoke with Prime Minister Zoran Zaev and congratulated him on implementation of the historic agreement, which was worked out between the two nation’s leaders in the summer of 2018.
The deputy secretary commended the Prime Minister for his strong leadership in securing the Agreement, which will lead to greater stability and prosperity in the Western Balkans.
Sullivan also emphasized that the United States looks forward to welcoming the country of North Macedonia as the thirtieth member of NATO.
