Teenage Girl Missing As Migrant Boat Sinks Near Lesvos

A 15-year-old girl went missing on Tuesday off the coast of Greece’s Lesvos Island.
The girl disappeared when a boat carrying fifty-two migrants who were trying to reach Greece in order to seek asylum in Europe capsized off the coast of the island of Lesvos.
The Greek Coast Guard saved 51 migrants, but unfortunately, the girl has not been found yet and is considered missing.
Greek authorities have begun a search and rescue operation, but their efforts are very difficult at present due to the bad weather in the area. Wintry weather, including snow and heavy rain, raged all over the Greek mainland and Aegean islands on Tuesday.
Despite the agreement between the EU and Turkey which aimed to put an end to the migrant flow from Turkey to Greece in 2016, thousands are still reaching the Greek shores every month.
According to the latest data provided by the Greek Coast Guard, 2,075 new migrants and refugees arrived on Greek islands in the eastern Aegean Sea during the month of January.
