Israel’s President Reuven Rivlin on Tuesday hailed his country’s flourishing ties with Cyprus during an official visit he made to Nicosia.
Rivlin stated that cooperation between the two neighbors in the areas of intelligence, security and terror prevention has made the eastern Mediterranean “much, much safer.”
“Security ties between our two countries have never been better,” the Israeli president noted after his talks with Cypriot counterpart Nicos Anastasiades.
Anastasiades expressed his glowing approval of the increasingly close Israeli-Cypriot security ties, saying the two countries’ navies and commando units share “space, knowledge and experience.”
He added that the focus of the neighbors’ strategic partnership, which includes Greece, is developing the “East Med” gas pipeline, which “could be one of the greatest underwater projects in the world.”
The envisioned pipeline would carry natural gas from deposits under the eastern Mediterranean Sea to the European heartland via Greece and Italy.
