The Greek Prime Minister gave an interview this week to the Turkish TGRT Haber television channel while he was in Turkey visiting Ankara, Istanbul and Halki.
The full interview will be broadcast on Sunday. In a snippet of the interview shown by Turkish television on Thursday night, Tsipras said that both the Greek and the Turkish people must live alongside each other in a peaceful and friendly environment.
The Greek prime minister noted that his visit to Turkey was an important moment in Greek-Turkish relations, and he urged the EU to support the two countries while they address the refugee crisis.
Tsipras pointed to the need for peaceful coexistence between the two countries, revealing that one of his grandparents was born in Istanbul.
The Greek PM also referred to his visit to the Theological School of Halki, saying that the two countries will be able to take “a new step” toward living together peacefully if the school reopens.
Alexis Tsipras was the first Greek prime minister to visit the school since its closure by the Turkish government in the 1970s.
