Tina Fey Will Present at the 2019 Oscars

A slew of Oscar presenters were announced today by the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences, and Tina Fey was officially named one of the 2019 presenters.

Other names on the list included Awkwafina, Jennifer Lopez, and Daniel Craig, along with Fey’s long-time friend and frequent creative partner, Amy Poehler. It is not clear if Poehler and Fey will be presenting together.

As of now, the 91st Academy Awards show still has no host. Initial host Kevin Hart stepped down after he refused to apologize for some comments he had made in the past on social media which some thought were homophobic. Since then, no new host has been chosen.

ABC President Karey Burke stated that after Hart stepped down, ABC didn’t look too hard for another host. She told the Television Critics’ Association, “There was an idea we were just going to have presenters host the Oscars and we all got on board pretty quickly”.

This decision was made partly to avoid the hassle of finding another host, and partly to help address the issue of running overtime, which the Oscars frequently seem to do.

The Academy Awards have not been host-less in over 30 years. Declining ratings for the Oscars have left ABC and the Academy searching for way to boost the popularity of the awards show. Burke believes a tighter show with high-profile presenters but no host, as well as musical performances of popular artists’ nominated songs, including Lady Gaga and Kendrick Lamar, may help.

The Oscars will be broadcast live on ABC on February 24.
