ANEL Party Set To Lose Parliamentary-Caucus Status

The ex co-governing right-wing Independent Greeks (ANEL) party is set to lose its parliamentary-caucus status following a statement issued by its M.P. Thanassis Papachristopoulos, who said that he will resign on Friday.
“I owe this seat to ANEL, and I will deliver it tomorrow,” Papachristopoulos said in an interview with ANT1 TV on Thursday morning.
If he resigns, his seat will be taken by the candidate who garnered the next most votes in the last general election. In this case, that would be Terence Quick, the deputy foreign minister of Greece, who has already left the ANEL party due to his support for the Prespa Agreement.
If Quick replaces Papachristopoulos, he is expected to declare that he stands as an independent M.P., which would leave ANEL’s parliamentary group without the necessary number of M.P.s to maintain its status as a separate parliamentary caucus.
The same situation occurred several days ago with the ”To Potami” party, after two of its M.P.s stood as Independents, which resulted in the dissolution of its parliamentary caucus.
