Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras was caught on camera on Tuesday telling EU leaders that the tens of thousands of Greek citizens who demonstrated in Athens against the name deal with FYROM were “extreme right populists”.
His inflammatory comments angered many social media users, who took to Twitter and Facebook to express their disapproval for their leader who made, as they said, arbitrary generalizations about millions of Greeks who oppose the Prespa Agreement.
Tsipras’ comments were heard as he was speaking to French President Emmanuel Macron and his Cypriot counterpart Nicos Anastasiadis at the fifth Southern EU Countries (“MED7”) Summit taking place in Nicosia.
The Greek premier is also heard saying that the majority of people who “are able to think and criticize using their brains” are in favor of the Prespa Agreement.
Main opposition leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis joined the chorus of criticism against Tsipras, saying that he “dared to insult the Greeks again. Not only did he call all those who react to the Prespa Agreement far-rightists, but also non-thinking.”
“He (Tsipras) did this brazenly and irresponsibly, before foreign leaders,” he added.
“He is not only a minority prime minister, he is also an unworthy prime minister that divides the people. The Greeks should remain united, proud and dignified, and very soon they will give him the answer he deserves,” Mitsotakis declared.
