Melbourne Greek Restaurant Honors Tennis Star with “Tsitsipas Souvlaki”

A Melbourne restaurant has now renamed a souvlaki dish in honor of Greek tennis sensation Stefanos Tsitsipas, who amazed the sporting world with his run in the Australian Open this week.

Stalactites, one of Melbourne’s longest-established and well-known Greek restaurants, now offers “Tsitsipas Souvlaki”. It features “lamb, tomato, tzatziki, fresh pomegranate, fresh basil and mint, crumbled feta, chips, and a touch of chilli”. The recipe was reportedly based on feedback it received from the tennis star.

The restaurant, which has been owned and operated by the same Greek family since 1978,  name a souvlaki in Tsitsipas’ honor, just as they did for Cypriot Marcos Baghdatis when he reached the Australian Open final in 2006.

“We feel so proud of Stefanos’ achievements in the Australian Open, and we are excited to create a souvlaki in his honor,” Stalactites managing director Nicole Papasavas said in a statement.

For his part, the Greek tennis star endorsed the new product, tweeting his approval.
