Tight Security Measures in Athens Ahead of Prespa Agreement Vote

The Greek police are bracing for possible violence at a demonstration against the Prespa Agreement which is scheduled to take place in Athens on Thursday evening.
The metro station at Syntagma Square will be closed from 16:30 local time (14:30 G.M.T.) on Thursday at the order of the police, and trains will pass through the station without stopping.
Many far-right groups have already been calling demonstrators to be ready for clashes with the police in front of the Greek Parliament.
This aggressive rhetoric from the nationalist side comes only a few days after the clashes outside of the Greek parliament when a group of far-right protesters climbed the stairs of the Parliament building and tried to fight their way inside.
Authorities are tightening the security for any possible repeat of the violence which marred the end of last Sunday’s demonstration, which had been a peaceful one for the most part.
Many central avenues and streets in Athens are now completely closed and will remain so for the evening.
Tonight’s measures are similar to the tight policing that was implemented during the first two years of the financial crisis and the massive anti-austerity demonstrations which the Greek capital saw between 2010 and 2012.
The vote on the Prespa Agreement is expected to take place sometime around midnight on Thursday night.
