Greek film director Marianna Economou will participate in this year’s Culinary Cinema of Berlinale, part of the 2019 Berlin International Film Festival. This special division of the Festival focuses on films which are ”food for thought”.
Her film is titled ”When Tomatoes Met Wagner” and its story takes place in Central Greece, in a small field in Thessaly.
According to anemon productions, the action occurs in the fictional village of ”Elias” in central Greece.
A long-lasting drought has left the village without water, but two cousins team up with several old women of the village to cultivate the tomato seeds that have been kept for hundreds of years.
Listening to Wagner’s music for motivation, and in hopes of helping their tomatoes to grow, the team succeeds in exporting jars of organic tomato sauce across Europe, the U.S. and Japan.
The film follows the main characters of this unlikely quest, as they struggle to survive and make their dream come true.
“Humorous and bittersweet, this is a story about the importance of reinventing oneself in times of crisis, and the power of human relationships,” anemon notes in its description of the film.
“When Tomatoes Met Wagner” will have its world premiere on February 12 at the Cubix cinema in Berlin.
