Stefanos Tsitsipas came back from a spectacular mid-match meltdown to become the first Greek player ever to make it through to the fourth round of the Australian Open.
The 20-year-old 14th seed triumphed, going 6-3 3-6 7-6 (9-7) 6-4 over Georgia’s Nikoloz Basilashvili in two hours and 54 minutes at the Margaret Court Arena in Melbourne.
Proving once again that he is not willing to give up without a fight, the Greek player had one of his most amazing performances against the talented Basilashvili.
Speaking with journalists after the match, Tsitsipas said that he’s happy to be able to play good tennis, and in a moment of honesty, admitted that he would prefer Taylor Fritz as his next opponent instead of tennis legend Roger Federer.
Tsitsipas once again thanked the thousands of Greek-Australian fans who turned out to support him, adding that the Australian Open is one of his favorite competitions of the year.
The win moved Tsitsipas into an impressive fourth-round tying position with Roger Federer, making Greek tennis fans proud of the tenacity and talent of the 20-year-old.
