Olivia Colman Wins Golden Globe for Lanthimos’ “The Favourite”

Olivia Colman at the 76th Golden Globe Awards

British actress Olivia Colman won a Golden Globe on Sunday night for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy for her performance as Queen Anne in Yorgos Lanthimos’ “The Favourite”.

This is Colman’s second Golden Globe. She had previously won one for “Best Supporting Actress in a Series” in 2017 for her role in “The Night Manager”.

Lanthimos’ “The Favourite” was nominated in five different categories, but Colman was the only one associated with the project who pulled off a win. There is some Oscar buzz after Colman’s win, suggesting she may be able to pick up an Academy Award as well for her performance.

Colman starred in the critically-acclaimed “The Favourite” along with Academy Award-winners Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz, and managed to shine brightly even in this star-laden cast. She thanked both her co-stars and her director, Lanthimos, in her speech.

After accepting her award, Colman said “Yorgos, thank you the most muchly and ma b*****s, Emma and Rachel, thank you, every second of working with you was such a joy and I was so sad that it finished”.

Colman has had a long and successful career in the U.K. for decades. However, she became better known to U.S. audiences only in the last few years, thanks to roles in series like “The Night Manager”, and some U.K. series which became Netflix hits (“The Crown” and “Broadchurch”).
