About 51 percent of Greece is currently blanketed in snow — varying from a light dusting of snow to debilitating snowfall — thanks to the two successive weather fronts, “Rafail” and “Sophia”.
Satellite data detailed above from the National Observatory of Athens visually illustrates just how much of the country is covered in snow as a result of the severe winter weather fronts.
According to a national weather bulletin from the National Meteorological Service, although there has been a slight break in the severe weather as “Sophia” passes, from Monday, a more severe weather front is anticipated, particularly, Greece is bracing for extremely low temperatures. Dense snowfall is certain throughout many regions of the country, sporadic storms in southern and coastal regions are expected, as well as gusty northern winds in Pelagi.
The severe weather has turned deadly. According to Greece’s fire service, on Sunday the bodies of two men missing since a severe downpour on Thursday, a 67 and 64-year-old, were found after having drowned in an overflowing creek which turned into a rapid-filled river when they were crossing it southeast of Athens. The 67-year-old’s wife’s body was found a few days later, on Saturday, in the backseat of a vehicle, she also had apparently drowned.
